Lens told the Patch that she “was encouraged to pursue art by her grandmother and mother, who would take her and her sister to the library where they could check out as many children's books as they wanted.” She said that the bright colors and pictures in those books inspired her to pursue a career as a children's book illustrator. The women coincidently met though the Castro Valley Parent Nursery School. Thankfully, fellow veteran Graciela Tiscareño-Sato is changing that with her new children’s book. Graciela is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, School of Environmental Design. Her Congressman gave a moving tribute to her life and work here. The Castro Valley Patch featured Cal State East Bay alumna Linda Lens, BA, art, (’03) and her collaboration with author Graciela Tiscareño-Sato on the soon-to-be released Good Night Captain Mama, a bilingual picture book about a female Air Force officer who explains her military service to her young son.
